Versatility

About a month ago I was at Kohl's perusing the clearance bath section for some tidbits and I found a light green ceramic trashcan dressed in a honeycomb design at 40% off the retail price. It was love at first sight, but I thought twice about making the purchase. I mean did I really need to replace my current trash bin? Of course not, so I let it ago. Until last week...

I saw the same honeycomb bin but this time at 80% off...zoink! Of course I bought it...along with the matching toothbrush holder and soap dispenser.

But I had other plans for them.

You see, I'm a knitter (though I only knit scarfs) and I have leftover balls of yarn scattered everywhere. So, I've been on the hunt for a cute basket to pile my spun wools. Problem?

Solved!

Next I thought the soap dispenser and toothbrush holder would make darling vases.

Pop out the dispenser, add some water and whala! A set of multifaceted goodies.

Have you ever re-invented a product's intended purpose?

  2. Great finds!! I love the honeycomb design. I have used a tooth brusher holder for a vase before. I just took off the lid that had the holes in it.

  3. Ah, the beloved honeycomb. So very cute and fabulous for plants and yarn! I like your purpose way better than the original one. And you used the word zoink which made this post a total zinger. So when's the big leggo reveal?

  4. 80% off!!! How can you pass up a deal like that? Great ideas for both the yarn and the vases! That's my girl :)

PS...I now know how to knit really cute dog sweaters. If you know any chilly dogs you can make them be both cozy and stylish. Come on over and we can knit up a storm.

I agree... I wish I was creative. We must hang out more so maybe it will rub off on me

  7. Love these! And Kohl's is so great--I've got a gift card from there I've been saving for a special occasion. Also, sort of unrelated...did you catch Lost this evening? Did you notice Miles dropping a new slang: "jabrones" when describing Nikki and Palo? I think you're bringing it back!

  8. Rosemary: lol. I did catch Miles throw in the 'jabrones' term! I guess it is slowly working its way back into popular culture. I'm picking up where "the Rock" left off...just doing my part.

  9. Thanks for your comment on my blog :)

I just spent the past 30 minutes completely hooked to reading your posts; you are too funny! I especially like the samoa cookie one- ha ha! and the one about painting Oscar's room. I'm following now so I can see how it all turns out

Oh, and great eye on the "vases". That honeycomb texture makes them look really modern and graphic.

  10. Very clever of you! (And no one in their right mind would have turned down an 80% off sale!) I have also used a toothbrush holder as a vase before - I'm a big fan of that idea!

  11. Cute ideas! Smart idea to wait for the 80% off :)Love it, thats one of my goals is to learn to knit! I just want to make scarfs too.

  12. Mrs. Chic: Knitting scarfs is so easy!! My mother -in-law (and her Knitting for Dummies book) taught me how to knit. Just one word of advice, start with larger needles...trust me. :)

  13. I'm a knitter of only scarves as well. I usually stash my yarn in the back of my closet. It's not a good plan. I end up forgetting about it and it gets tangled. Its all around a big mess. I love your solution.

Btw, is that a hand painted sewing machine the the background of the third picture?

  14. Jamie Lee: It's actually a hello kitty sewing machine. It was part of my wedding registry (woohoo go Target!) :)
